REVIEW ON THE BIG MOON'S NEWEST SINGLE 'FORMIDABLE'

London four piece The Big Moon seem to have claimed 2016 as theirs, after touring alongside Mystery Jets and Ezra Furman, The Big Moon are making a name for themselves after releasing huge singles such as ‘Sucker’, ‘Cupid’ and their latest release ‘Formidable’

‘Formidable’ begins with Juliette Jackson (guitar, vocals) and her guitar flying solo creating what seems like a safe zone, Jackson blasts out harrowing lyrics like ‘Did she make you swallow all your pride?” and “Does the love still shiver down your spine?” Luring us into a false sense of security. The song then takes a dramatic twist, a quick guitar riff from Soph Nathan introduces the next phase of the song. Jackson’s delicate vocals have vanished revealing her passionate cries, gone are the tropical synths provided by drummer Fern Ford instead we witness an organised mess of cymbals, high hats and bass drums and backing vocals from bassist Celia Archer and Guitarist Soph Nathan provide a mysterious backdrop conveying that this fun song may not be about a fun topic.

The evidence of this was provided when the band were being interviewed about the music video that they released to go alongside the song. “Formidable is a song that’s important to us all and it felt like for once, it wasn’t appropriate to make a mega fun, LOLZ video.” The video itself was filmed mid-tour in the heart of the Peak District where we find ourselves following Jackson around whilst she is driving a white van. Halfway through the video Jackson ventures into the back of the van where her other three band mates are ready and waiting to perform the song under intimate purple lighting. Even though the video is a major contrast from their previous videos, I am still bewildered by the fact that the band could fit four people, three guitars and a drum kit into such a claustrophobic space without clubbing each other with their instruments!

‘Formidable’ was taken from The Big Moon’s debut album which Jackson referred to as a “Really delicious roast dinner” and  will be released on 7th April next year called  ‘Love In the 4th Dimension’ and is available to pre-order on the band’s website.
