Picture the scene, 2 pm, -2 degrees, 10 girls and one lad sat on the floor in front of the venue, wasting away their time bc who needs school anyways right. And to be fair, it was fully worth it.
Here's a little back story. The first time Nothing but Thieves played this room in this venue they were supporting Gerard Way (note: it wasn't sold out). A few months later they come back for London Calking festival in a tiny room in the north of Amsterdam where they played in front a crowd of maybe 100. Next time they came back they sold out a 350 cap room, after that a headline slot at London Calling in the main room of paradiso (1500), 3 nights w muse (17000) and now their biggest headline show to date, a sold ! out ! melkweg !

What I'm trying to say is, it was gonna be a big night no matter what. And as always Nothing but Thieves lived up to all the expectations. Honestly, what a band.
As the band open with Itch you can feel the entire room gaping at them in awe, yes yes that's the sound that actually just came out of Conor Mason. Even as a long time fan of the band I cannot believe his vocals are as good as they are.
It's a shame the crowd continue the gaping for the remainder of the gig. Amsterdam crowds are not nearly as rowdy as you'd expect them to be and this night was a definite reminder of that.
The 2 new songs, called Get Better and Design, both seem like a step up from the old songs. The way they highlight Conor's vocal abilities are insane.
Get Better sort of reminded me of Itch, in having very dark, moody and laid back verses with a big stadium anthem kind of chorus.
Design was played a little later on in the set. This is also the one that stuck with me the most. The chorus being a wall of sound in the very best possible way. I'm saying bigger even that the choruses on Excuse Me, greater than the high notes of that bit in If I Get High.
Needless to say I cannot wait for the new material to be released. For which, coincidentally, the writing is being finished as we speak! All of it will be recorded in late January.
Cannot wait to see what the future holds for these boys. Going from playing 100- to 5000 capacity rooms in the last 2 years, it's fair to say big things lie ahead.
