It is obvious that the trio from London are taking a new approach with their latest album, the electronic synths from band member Jamie XX's debut album (In Colour, 2015) are leaking into the band's work evident in the first single from their new album, "On Hold" and now with "Say Something Loving". However, as "On Hold" was a whirlwind of electronic synths, pop and indie, I find myself wondering if the two songs were made by the same band: whereas "On Hold" had effortless production making it a great comeback for the band, listening to "Say Something Loving" sounds as if the jigsaw just doesn't fit. On the contrary I appreciate the experimental value of the song and the new sound of the XX. The lyrics also show deep emotion giving us an insight to the band, lines like "Before it slips away" and "I don't remember the thrill of affection" dives deep into the emotions of anyone listening triggering feelings that we all thought were burried deep inside us. Although I have mixed feelings on this particular single I am intrigued by the different direction that the XX has decided to take with this album and can't wait to see the result of a four year absence from the band!
Their new album 'I Dare You' will be released on 13th January and is available for pre-order online.
