2016 so far seems to be THE year for amazing new music that everyone cannot wait to get their hands on, with a new Catfish and the Bottlemen single and tour announced shortly after and Jake Bugg's smashing comeback there was wonder if this year so far could get any better... until today. Today the 26th of February, the 1975 released 'I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it', following on from their debut self titled album released in 2013. After disappearing completely from the internet in June last year, fans wondered if they were even going to get a new album at all from this ominous Mancunian band, until in their true secretive style they broke out into colour creating a whole new era for the 1975, and trust me change is good. As now 8 months down the line, we are sitting here (in tears) with a yet another incredible new album from this fast bloomed pop band.
With 17 songs on this record including recent hit 'the sound' and new release 'change of heart', each and every one perfectly represents who this band truly are. Although yes, this album has a very different style to the last incorporating a much more of a 80s and pop feel to it, the band carried out some of their old lyrics and their old stories to create a more complete picture between the two albums, and it have to say.. perfection isn't a strong enough word.
Lyrics "face straight outta magazine" from one of their most meaningful songs 'Robbers' has obtained its place again on the new album, with lyrics "you used to have a face straight outta magazine now you just look like anyone, i've just had a change of heart" from song 'A Change Of Heart'. Contrasting from their previous record thus capturing one of the most fascinating facets on the 1975: their story telling through their songs, songs that everyone can relate to in some way or another- frontman Matty Healy isn't shy of sharing his own thoughts with us, with abrupt real lyrics such as "you look shit and you smell a bit" perfectly allowing us to connect with the band, not just listening to 'another love song'.
With mixtures of synths, saxophone solos and awesome catchy guitar riffs there has been contemplation whether this album has somewhat topped the last; most going mad about it on social media and getting various retweets from manager Jamie O'Bourne.
Now it's up to you to decide- you can listen to their self titled debut album for free on spotify and buy 'I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it' on iTunes and trust me, if you are looking for another album that is definitely worth the hype; this is the one for you.
