GIGCHECK: THE 1975 @ COLUMBIAHALLE, BERLIN 08.04.16 / LIVE REVIEW

"Hey Berlin, guess what: it's my birthdaaaay", frontman Matty Healy says to open the show as he is wearing a huge Happy Birthday hat that was thrown on the stage by fans, the crowd already holding up several 'Happy Birthday Matty' posters - and with that an unforgetable night for probably both, band with Birthday Kid Matty and fans start. But how did this show really go down?

For that, let's look back to the very beginning of the day. It was early in the morning as the first fans started queueing to be the first to get into the venue and be as close to the band as possible. Luckily, the weather has been with everyone so that the sun was filling the streets of Berlin, and everyone was able to finish their concert preparations, birthday gifts and what else there was left to get done.

After being finally let into the venue, the fantastic Amber Bain aka The Japanese House opened the show, and kicked off the amazing night just perfectly. The response of the crowd, even after Bain messed up her pedals during 'Cool Blue', has already been great then but as the 1975 finally started their set with major hit 'Love Me' off their newest album ' I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it' (Read: The 1975 - I like it when you sleep - album review ), there was no holding back for anyone anymore.

As I haven't had the pleasure to see them live before, I had my expectations high on finally seeing a personal favorite band live and may I add, I have not been disappointed: from the outstanding visuals that seemed to be individually adjusted to  e v e r y  musical moment in the show, to the unbelievable live performance of the quartet in general - everything seemed to be perfectly on point. No wonder why this band has never been doing better as right now, and why the venue of a capacity of around 3600 was not only highly crowded but filled with people of all ages ( to the grandma in the front row next to me filming the whole thing: you rock ).

The setlist was basically an emotional 90 minute journey through their entire discography - including the classics like 'Girls', 'Chocolate' and 'Sex', fan favorites like 'You' or 'Anobrain' and, of course, a whole bunch of songs off the new album such as 'She's American', 'Paris', 'Somebody Else' and recent hit 'The Sound'.

With all the ups and downs, ballads and dance songs, intimate moments like the one the band and the crowd shared during 'Me' as everyone put their phones away and was asked to just live in the moment, or the one as Healy mentioned what is going on in Europe at the moment and basically dedicated 'Paris' to everyone who unfortunately has not been as lucky. As the crowd tried to sing Happy Birthday to Matty. Or as the whole crowd held up their flashlights, and left the band truly touched; with all these very special moments there has been a chance for everyone to make memories that will last for a lifetime. And with all the truly visible work they put into this live show, this is probably exactly their intention. I, for my part, will not forget about this magical night any time soon, - and I can not wait to see them again in the future. There is no chance I'm missing out on them when they come back for another european tour, and you shouldn't miss out on attending at least one of their shows in your life either.
