Dua lipa is a new and upcoming artist, with only a few singles out. With an album on the horizon and a collaboration with Chris Martin coming out soon, it is not long before she becomes big. Several of her songs have already attracted massive attention and made their way into the uk top 40. This includes 'hotter than hell' and 'blow your mind'.
Recently I went to see her play live in Shepherd's Bush, London. Initially I was extremely apprehensive about seeing her live as I loved her released music but I did not trust that she could sing in the way that her songs sounded. As soon as she began to sing my view changed completely, if anything her voice was 10 times better live than on any prerecorded track. It was incredible to hear such a talented woman performing live, she was clearly so passionate about what she was doing, you could almost feel her emotion through every note she sang.
Her music is based around pop but with slight differences making her music unique and unlike anything I've heard before. To me it is her voice that makes her music special, it is individual and can quickly transition from light and airy to harsh and loud. While she was playing live she played two songs with only a guitar accompaniment, these were her 'sad' songs with powerful messages behind. With these songs she showed the melodies, high notes and airiness that she can create with her voice. The pure contrast of this with her other songs made the performance special as there was a more personal section along with the songs that make you want to jump and dance. On the other hand through her other songs she translated her vocal range in a subtle way. Overall I really hope that she gets the recognition that she deserves with such raw talent. And I view that it won't be long until she does, especially based on her loyal fans that traveled all across the world just to hear her live.
