While England was partying when they had the remarkable Truck Festival going on, The North-East of Germany celebrated the Melt! Festival with an amount of roughly 20.000 visitors in hot and sunny weather.
Here are some of my personal highlights of being a part if this years incredible Melt! Festival.
Day 1 / Friday
Day 1 started off just perfectly with Roosevelt as the first act I saw playing once I got to the festival site, after travelling all day to make my way to the small town where the festival takes place every year. And Roosevelt along with his band most definitely did not disappoint! The 25 year old musician from colonge just dropped his debut album in August and from what I heard live, it is one artist to watch.
Later I saw M83 play the Main Stage and they literally killed it with their beats fulfilling the entire ground of the area.
Headliner of the same night was australian band Tame Impala and they blessed us with their outstanding live performance and made everyone go crazy with loads and loads confetti being thrown at the crowd. An outstanding live performance of an outstanding band. The fans and festival visitors loved it.
Day 2 / Saturday
On Saturday we had Two Door Cinema Club play the Main Stage with full power, turning the crowd into a massive mosh pit. The band played a handful of old and new songs such as Are We Ready? of their forthcoming album Gameshow that is due to release October 14.
Another highlight was german band Kytes playing the lovely tiny Orangerie the same night and eventhough this stage was quite small compared to the main stages, the energy of the crowd could really compete with the other ones. If haven't already been a fan of them before, then you definitely were one after watching this incredible set.
For those who didn't get enough and wanted to continue partying through the night, they could check out Jamie XX's set at 2 am.
Day 3 / Sunday
With Sunday the third and last day of this years melt! festival you would expect everyone to be hang over, tired, and ready to go home. But oh no, how wrong you are if you think everyone has had enough.
The american electro-pop trio Chvrches was one of the last acts to play the Main Stage on Sunday, along with final headliner Disclosure who's set we sadly missed. Front-woman Lauren Mayberry quickly waked everyone up who has had a couple of exhausting and long festival nights on their back with her energy and twirled around the entire stage.
Of course, that was not all.
If you know anything about me, then it is probably my huge love for a band called Circa Waves all the way from Liverpool. The band played the Orangerie at 11pm at night after headlining Truck festival just a day before. Eventhough this crowd was far smaller than Truck's, they still played themselves into our hearts and with a suspension intro that built up the tension to kick off their set, they impressed and became the actual and secret headliner. Their energy of performing spread over to the now not-so-tired festival visitors, and so they ended their set with singer Kieran Shudall in the middle of the crowd, dancing and singing with everyone.
To give a final rating, I rate this festival with a total of 4 out of 5 stars.
Ow, why I took off one star?
Well, there should definitely be a place at the campsite to buy goceries for a serious hunger/thirst-emergency (a 1l apple juice pack for 6€ is just ugh!), and maybe we are just too addicted to music that we wished more artists would play the afternoons. And maybe it was just stupidity that we found out there is a shuttle service from campsite to festival site that could've spared us the 20-minute-walk every day, and that there are actual water dispensers all over the area in case you get thirsty. (So yeah, definitely stupidity)
But let's focus on the good things Melt! Festival has to offer!
The vibe on the insanely big festival site was fantastic,
the people nice and amount of visitors manageable,
the nights longer than you would expect on a festival (but the credits for this one probably go out to the Sleepless Floor for playing music till 7 am and being the location for everyone who doesn't want to go to sleep)
the festival site and surroundings clearly and obviously decorated and organised with love of the people behind this fantastic festival so that everyone feels comfortable and amazing and just like home and has a reason to come back.
There are a handful of huge indie and alternative names there every year, along with a loooot of electronic music, (probably more than you would like), so I suggest you to check this festival out yourself if that's the kind of music you love. And a lot of people do exactly that, obviously. Melt! is a festival where people from all over the world come together to have a good time, and oh, it is worth it.
